01What ChatGPT ads are

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT’s answers and matched to the conversation, not to a keyword.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. On 6 June 2026 the UK became the first European market to get them, and many more European countries followed in August. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu) stay ad-free.

The ads sit underneath the answer, are labelled “Sponsored” and are kept visually separate from it. Rather than bidding on keywords, advertisers describe where they’re relevant using context hints, and ChatGPT matches ads to the context of the conversation. In the US, a self-serve Ads Manager beta opened in May 2026, adding CPC bidding alongside CPM, plus a pixel and a Conversions API for measurement. UK advertisers can get access via Ads Manager (beta) or managed access, but availability and features are changing quickly.

That makes ChatGPT a real opportunity and a real unknown. People use it to compare options and think decisions through, often before they search anywhere else. Being early can pay off, as long as you test with money you can afford to learn with, while Google Ads, Meta Ads or TikTok Ads keep doing the heavy lifting. Not sure where you stand? 02How the ads work

Where a ChatGPT ad appears, and where it can’t.

OpenAI has set out clear principles for advertising in ChatGPT. They limit what any advertiser can do, and they’re worth understanding before you plan a campaign.

  • Ads sit below ChatGPT’s answers and don’t change them
  • Conversations aren’t shared with advertisers
  • No ads for users under 18
  • No ads near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics
  • Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu) stay ad-free

01 · The conversation

Someone asks ChatGPT for help

A logged-in adult on the Free or Go plan asks a question: comparing software, planning a weekend in London, choosing a supplier.

02 · The answer

ChatGPT answers as normal

The answer is written without reference to advertisers. OpenAI says ads don’t influence what ChatGPT says.

03 · The match

An ad is matched to the context

The system reads the context of the conversation, guided by advertisers’ context hints. In the UK, personalisation needs opt-in consent; otherwise matching is contextual.

04 · The placement

A labelled ad appears below

The ad sits underneath the answer, marked “Sponsored” and visually separate. Users can see why they were shown it, and dismiss it.

03Side by side

ChatGPT Ads vs Google Search Ads: different jobs.

Both put an ad in front of someone with a question. The similarities mostly end there. Correct as of October 2026. ChatGPT Ads is still in beta, so we update this as the platform changes.

How ChatGPT Ads compare with Google Search Ads, as of October 2026
Compared on ChatGPT Ads Google Search Ads
How ads are matched To the context of the conversation, guided by the context hints you provide. No keyword bidding. To search queries via keywords and match types, increasingly broadened by Google’s own AI.
Where ads appear Below ChatGPT’s answer, labelled “Sponsored” and visually separate from it. Above and below the organic results, labelled “Sponsored”, plus Shopping and Maps placements.
Buying model CPM, with CPC bidding added in the Ads Manager beta. Options vary by market and are still evolving. Mostly cost per click, with automated bidding towards conversions or conversion value.
Maturity New. US testing began in February 2026 and the UK launch followed in June. Expect frequent change. More than two decades old, with mature tooling, benchmarks and deep historical data.
Measurement A pixel and a Conversions API, which we pair with GA4, CRM matching and brand-search reads. Google tag, enhanced conversions, offline conversion imports and GA4, all well established.
Best use Reaching people earlier in the decision, while they research, compare and plan. Capturing people actively searching for what you sell, right now.
Budget approach A ring-fenced test with a fixed end date and a success measure agreed up front. A core, always-on budget, scaled when campaigns hit their target CPA or ROAS.

04Our test framework

How we run a ChatGPT test you can actually judge.

  1. A clear question, agreed up front

Every test starts with a written hypothesis and a success measure: for example, qualified demo requests at a cost within an agreed range of your Google Ads benchmark. If we can’t define success, we don’t launch.

  2. A ring-fenced budget and an end date

We set a capped budget and a fixed test window. The money is kept separate from campaigns that already pay their way, so a new channel can never quietly starve a proven one.

  3. Context hints from real conversations

Sales calls, enquiry forms, reviews and search-term reports show what customers actually ask before they buy. We turn those questions into context hints and keep a list of conversations that aren’t a fit.

  4. Ads that feel like a sensible next step

Someone reading a ChatGPT answer is mid-thought. The best ads continue that thought: specific, useful and calm, with a landing page that picks up exactly where the conversation left off.

  5. Measurement in place before day one

Pixel and Conversions API set up and checked, tagged links into GA4 and, where possible, leads matched in your CRM. We also watch brand search and direct traffic for the knock-on effect a research-stage channel can have.

  6. An honest read-out, including “stop”

At the end of the window you get a written verdict: scale, refine or stop, with the numbers and our reasoning. A test that tells you to stop has still saved you money.

05Process

From eligibility check to a clear verdict.

A fixed-length test with a written decision at the end, so ChatGPT Ads never becomes a line on the invoice nobody questions.

  1. 01

    Eligibility & opportunity check

    Free · first conversation

We check whether your sector can advertise in the UK, whether your customers use ChatGPT to research what you sell, and whether your tracking can support a fair test. If now isn’t the right time, we’ll say so.

  2. 02

    Context-hint map

    Week 1

We map the questions and situations where your brand is a genuinely useful next step, turn them into context hints, and note the conversations you shouldn’t appear next to.

  3. 03

    Creative & landing pages

    Weeks 1–2

Ad variations that read like helpful suggestions, and landing pages that answer the question the person was actually asking.

  4. 04

    Ring-fenced launch

    Fixed test window

Live with a capped budget and an end date, pixel and Conversions API verified, and a short weekly note on what we’re seeing and changing.

  5. 05

    Read-out & decision

    End of test

A written read-out comparing cost per qualified outcome with your other channels, what we learned about context and creative, and a clear recommendation: scale, refine or stop.

06Who it suits

Who should test ChatGPT ads now, and who should wait.

ChatGPT is where people think decisions through. That suits some businesses far better than others, and we’d rather tell you now than after you’ve spent.

  • Good fit

    B2B software & SaaS

Buyers ask ChatGPT to compare tools, draft shortlists and sanity-check pricing. A relevant placement beside that research can earn a demo request.

Judged on qualified demos & pipeline

  • Good fit

    Considered online purchases

Higher-ticket products people research before buying (furniture, bikes, tech, specialist kit), where a useful suggestion mid-research matters.

Judged on sales & return on ad spend

  • Good fit

    Travel, hospitality & experiences

Planning is one of the most natural uses of ChatGPT: where to eat in Soho, a venue for 40 in the City, a weekend away from London.

    Judged on bookings & enquiries

  • Good fit

    Education & training

Course comparisons, career changes and professional qualifications: long decisions where people ask a lot of questions first.

    Judged on applications & enquiries

  • Not yet

    No reliable tracking

If you can’t see which of today’s leads become customers, you won’t be able to judge a new channel either. Fix measurement first. We can help.

07Example test

B2B software company, London: a ChatGPT test judged on pipeline.

Google Ads stayed the core channel. Once CRM data was steering bids towards sales-qualified leads, we ring-fenced a small share of budget for ChatGPT Ads, aimed at software-comparison conversations, with context hints written from questions prospects asked on sales calls.

Every ChatGPT lead was matched in the CRM and judged on the same pipeline measure as Google, so the end-of-test decision (extend, with tighter context hints) rested on qualified pipeline, not clicks.

  • 10%Of media budget ring-fenced for ChatGPT
  • 8 wksFixed test window, then a decision
  • +58%Sales-qualified leads across the programme

Illustrative example. ChatGPT Ads is a new channel; results depend on sector, eligibility, budget and starting point.

Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026, and ads went live for UK users on the Free and Go plans on 6 June 2026, making the UK the first European market. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu) remain ad-free.

UK advertisers can get access via Ads Manager (beta) or managed access. Availability and features are changing quickly, so we confirm the current position for your business before planning anything.

Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer, labelled “Sponsored” and kept visually separate from the response. They’re matched to the context of the conversation rather than to keywords you bid on. Users can see why they were shown an ad and can dismiss it.

Today that means a sponsored placement underneath answers. Other formats may follow, but we plan around what’s live, not what’s rumoured.

OpenAI says it doesn’t. Its stated principles are that ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, conversations aren’t shared with advertisers, ads aren’t shown to under-18s, and ads don’t appear near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics.

In practice, you can’t buy your way into the answer itself, only into the labelled space below it. That’s why we focus on making the ad a genuinely useful next step for the person reading.

Instead of bidding on keywords, you give the system context hints: descriptions of the situations, needs and questions where your product is relevant. ChatGPT then matches ads to the context of the conversation, guided by those hints.

In the UK and EU, personalisation requires the user’s opt-in consent; without it, ads are purely contextual. We write context hints from your sales calls, enquiries, reviews and search-term data, then refine them as results come in.

There’s no published minimum we’d plan around, and the platform is changing quickly. We recommend a ring-fenced test budget (a set share of your paid media for a fixed period) that runs alongside the channels already working for you, never instead of them.

The right figure depends on your sector, deal value and how many conversions you need to judge the test fairly. We’ll propose an amount, a timeframe and a success measure in writing before you spend anything.

ChatGPT Ads offers a pixel and a Conversions API. We set up and check both before launch, tag every ad link for GA4 and, wherever possible, match leads or sales back to your CRM.

People often research in ChatGPT and buy later, so we also watch brand search and direct traffic for knock-on effects, and compare cost per qualified outcome (not just clicks) with your other channels.

It suits businesses whose customers research, compare or plan before buying: B2B software, considered online purchases, travel and hospitality, education and training. It’s less suited to urgent, local needs, where people still go straight to Google.

Some sectors are restricted: financial, health and legal services may face limits outside the US, and ads aren’t shown near sensitive topics. We check eligibility before you spend.

Yes, for almost every business. Google Ads captures people actively searching for what you sell, with mature tools and years of data behind it. ChatGPT Ads reaches people earlier, while they’re still thinking a decision through.

We treat ChatGPT as a ring-fenced test alongside a well-run Google account (and often alongside Meta Ads to create demand), not as a replacement for either.
